Gonstead chiropratic

The Gonstead chiropractic technique is a specific, detailed system of chiropractic care developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead in the early 20th century. It's known for being very precise and biomechanically sound, aiming to find and correct subluxations (misalignments of the spine) with a focus on structural and functional integrity of the spine and nervous system.

1. Thorough Analysis Process

Gonstead chiropractors use a five-step process to analyze the spine:

  1. Visualization – Watching for changes in posture, gait, and appearance that might suggest spinal issues.

  2. Instrumentation – Using a device called a Nervoscope, which detects uneven heat distribution along the spine (a sign of inflammation or nerve pressure).

  3. Static Palpation – Feeling the spine while the patient is stationary to detect swelling, tenderness, or abnormal texture.

  4. Motion Palpation – Moving the spine to feel for restricted or abnormal motion between vertebrae.

  5. X-rays – Full-spine X-rays are often used to assess posture, disc integrity, and spinal alignment.

2. Specific Adjustments

  • Adjustments are targeted and precise, aimed at specific segments of the spine.

  • Unlike some other methods, Gonstead doesn’t use rotational twisting of the neck. Instead, it emphasizes straight-line thrusts that match the natural biomechanics of the spine.

  • The goal is to correct subluxations with minimal force and maximum effectiveness.

3. Gonstead is commonly used for conditions like:

  • Back and neck pain

  • Sciatica

  • Disc problems

  • Postural issues

  • Headaches

  • Any joint pain

  • General wellness and preventative care
